I am against the death penalty in all cases, so I’m certainly against it for things, such as sex crimes
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma on Friday became the fifth state to allow the death penalty for certain sex crimes, although legal scholars questioned the constitutionality of the new state law.
Under the measure signed by Gov. Brad Henry, anyone convicted twice for rape, sodomy or lewd molestation involving children under 14 can face the death penalty.
South Carolina's governor signed a similar law on Thursday allowing the death penalty for offenders convicted twice of raping children younger than 11. Louisiana, Florida and Montana also have laws allowing the death penalty for certain sex crimes.
There are so many things that strike me wrong with these laws. First of all, is it really good to tell someone who is molesting a child that their actions will get them death? Wouldn’t it be easier for that person just to kill the child, that way there is a less likely chance of his actions being found out? I mean, if he is going to get the death penalty anyway, what really would stop a predator from doing this?
Let’s say that I agreed with the death penalty for people that commit murder. Isn’t this a little different, seeing as the criminal didn’t actually kill anyone? Is there any reason why we couldn’t just put him in jail for life (and I don’t want to hear any of that, “well, he’ll get out on parole” bullshit, either, because it is very easy to sentence someone to life without parole)?
